DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP
Former Premier League champion manager Roberto Mancini is on the verge of returning to the Italy national team after concluding his tenure in Qatar.
Roberto Mancini, now officially a free agent, appears closer than ever to resuming his role with the Italian national side. The coach, who made history by guiding Manchester City to a Premier League title, has announced his departure from his Qatari club, signalling the beginning of a new chapter in his managerial career.
Official farewell to Al-Sadd
Mancini has formally confirmed the end of his stint in the Middle East. In a farewell video shared on his social media platforms, the former Inter Milan and Manchester City boss expressed gratitude to Al-Sadd supporters, confirming speculation that he had stepped away from the club's coaching project after achieving notable domestic success.
“Hello everyone, I’m recording this video to thank all Al-Sadd fans who supported us throughout the season and helped us climb so many positions until we won the league. Thanks also to the club and its directors for helping me and my staff settle in,” Mancini said.
A tribute to his players & looking ahead to the World Cup
Even with persistent reports linking him to the Italy coaching job, Mancini took a moment to acknowledge his former players and to send best wishes to the Qatar national team as they prepare for the World Cup. The coach underlined the human and professional strength of the group he worked with during his time abroad, once again showcasing his ability to foster unity and motivation within the squad.
Mancini added: “Thank you to my incredible players, both on and off the field, for always giving everything for the team. And finally, best of luck to the Qatar national team as they begin their World Cup journey. Thank you all so much — you will always have a place in my heart.”
The Azzurri bench awaits
With Mancini now out of contract, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is expected to intensify its efforts to bring him back as Italy's head coach. After weeks of evading questions from journalists with cautious remarks, Mancini now appears ready to take on the national team challenge once again, particularly following his recent subtle hints about the job.
Just days ago, when quizzed about his future, Mancini replied briefly: “Me, Italy coach? Sorry, but I have to go to dinner.” The Italy managerial position remains vacant following Gennaro Gattuso’s resignation after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
A return to Italy after Euro 2020 glory
Mancini’s managerial career has been decorated with major triumphs — from his unforgettable last-minute Premier League title win with Manchester City to his memorable Euro 2020 victory with Italy at Wembley. His vast international experience is seen as essential for starting a new era of success and restoring the national team’s global reputation after recent disappointments in World Cup qualification.
Before moving to Qatar, Mancini had taken charge of the Saudi Arabia national team following his surprise exit from the Italy job. However, his tenure with Saudi Arabia proved difficult, culminating in his dismissal after a goalless draw against Bahrain.
