Deputy Mayor of Palangka Raya Awaits Performances from Argentina and Portugal

The Deputy Mayor of Palangka Raya, Achmad Zaini, expressed his excitement for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will soon kick off.

He stated that the world’s biggest football event is eagerly anticipated by the public as it showcases top-quality matches featuring the best players from around the globe.

“We should be happy. This year, God willing, we can once again follow the World Cup matches closely. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to watch together. I’m personally a football fan,” said Zaini after attending a joint ceremony to commemorate the Birth of Pancasila at the Palangka Raya City Hall on Monday (June 1, 2026).

He hopes that the World Cup excitement can also be felt by the people of Palangka Raya.

One way to achieve this, he said, is through community viewing events, known locally as ‘nonton bareng’ (watching together), which can serve as a gathering moment for local residents to enjoy the matches collectively.

“Hopefully, we can watch together. We hope there will be such moments in our city as well—group viewing events. I will also bring this up with the Mayor of Palangka Raya,” he added.

When asked about his favourite players, Zaini admitted that he still admires the senior footballers who have long been icons of the sport.

He specifically mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as names that remain strongly associated with international football in his mind.

“Yes, my favourites are still the senior ones, like Messi and Ronaldo,” he said with a smile.

Nevertheless, Zaini hopes that the 2026 World Cup will not only showcase established stars but also introduce new talents capable of performing at the highest level.

According to him, one of the most captivating aspects of the World Cup is the emergence of young players who shine on the global stage and eventually become world-class football icons.

“In essence, there are many players we should look forward to. Hopefully, this World Cup will give rise to more world-class players. Usually, it’s during the World Cup that we see players proving their world-class quality,” he explained.

Zaini emphasized the importance of player regeneration to keep global football entertaining and competitive for fans worldwide.

He added that it is time for the new generation to step up, demonstrate their abilities, and become the successors to the established international football stars.
