Unemployment: Government data released on Monday reveals that the unemployment rate, which stood at 5.2 percent in April, rose to 5.5 percent in May. Here are the details.
Unemployment: The figures for India are concerning. The unemployment rate has risen once again, reaching 5.5 percent in May—up from 5.2 percent in April. This marks the highest level seen in the last 11 months. Surprisingly, while there is a slight improvement in the urban situation, conditions in rural areas are deteriorating. People in villages are unable to find work, creating a crisis in the job market.
Rising unemployment in villages
The rural unemployment rate rose from 4.6 percent in April to 5.1 percent. Conversely, the urban unemployment rate declined; the figure dropped from 6.6 percent to 6.4 percent in May. This indicates better job prospects in urban areas. Notably, this marks the fourth consecutive month of rising unemployment, reaching its highest level in 11 months.
Decline in the workforce
It is not just unemployment that has risen; the proportion of the working population has also fallen. The labour force participation rate dropped to 54.4 percent in May from 55 percent in April. Similarly, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) declined from 52.2 percent to 51.4 percent. This implies that the pace of job creation is lagging behind the influx of people into the labour market.
Challenges for women and youth
Recent data indicates that employment opportunities for women in rural areas remain severely limited. Meanwhile, concerns regarding unemployment persist among the youth. The issue extends beyond just men and women; the unemployment rate poses a threat to a nation's economic health. Rising employment boosts people's incomes, thereby driving consumption and economic activity. Conversely, an increase in unemployment can impact consumer spending and slow down the pace of economic growth.
