Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo has expressed strong confidence that Ghana can advance from their group at the upcoming World Cup, even though the Black Stars finished at the bottom of their group in Qatar four years ago.
Semenyo, who will face England in Ghana’s second group fixture in Boston, believes his team is ready to surprise many on the world stage. The 26-year-old forward is eager to test himself against top competition at football’s biggest event.
Speaking as the new Global Brand Ambassador for Ahmad Tea, Semenyo said: “We believe we can cause some upsets ourselves. We have a great group. We are missing some key players through injury but we still have so much talent in the team.”
He continued, “It is going to be a tough group and the first target is to get out of that, but we back ourselves against any team. If we can reach the knockout stages, then who knows how far we can go?”
The Manchester City star added, “I’m just looking forward to getting out there and playing more minutes on the biggest stage. The last World Cup was disappointing as we didn’t get out of the group stage. Our target is to do better than that this time.”
Semenyo’s journey since the last World Cup has been remarkable. At that time, he was playing in the Championship for Bristol City. Shortly after the tournament, he secured a £10 million transfer to Bournemouth in the Premier League, marking a significant step in his career.
After three impressive seasons with Bournemouth, Semenyo completed a high-profile move to Manchester City in January, where he contributed to the club’s domestic cup double triumph.
Reflecting on his earlier World Cup experience, Semenyo said he remains proud of his achievements but feels more prepared and mature as a player this time. “To go to the World Cup as a Championship player was a proud moment personally for me,” he said. “That was a great time, but this World Cup I feel more prepared as a player and even more focussed to really do my best.”
Ghana will open their World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto, and Semenyo is determined to help the team make a strong start.
Antoine Semenyo recently became the Global Brand Ambassador for Ahmad Tea, one of the world’s leading family-owned tea companies known for its commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
