During post-mission debriefs, the pilot told officials he saw “multiple drones interconnected and moving as one with smaller drones below the bigger drones like legs”. One source familiar with the account called it “real alien sh_t”. Another said the pilot described a “minefield of drones” in the sky.
If confirmed, the sighting would point to a significant advance in Iran’s unmanned aerial capabilities, particularly coordinated drone swarms. Early assessments suggest the formation may have helped Iran target the aircraft, though the exact cause of the shootdown remains under investigation.
U.S. intelligence officials are divided on the reliability of the account. The pilot suffered a concussion during ejection and was previously shot down in a friendly-fire incident with Kuwaiti forces earlier in the conflict. It’s unclear whether the weapons systems officer saw anything similar.
Iranian authorities released images claiming to show wreckage from a U.S. helicopter crash during the rescue mission, though the U.S. said the pilot was successfully extracted by Special Operations forces.
The incident comes as Washington and Tehran continue negotiations amid a 60-day ceasefire-based talks period that began last week.
