AC Milan need one more defender for Amorim: Barcelona’s Gerard Martin is an option

AC Milan’s first pre-season friendly at Celtic Park against Celtic gave a few clear signals, some positive and some not so encouraging. Milan began poorly, lacking sharpness and struggling in defensive moments. If they want to continue with an ambitious technical project like Amorim’s, based on building from the back, they need defenders with better technical quality than the ones currently in the squad. One possibility could come from Spain, more specifically from Barcelona, where Gerard Martin plays and has been on AC Milan’s transfer watchlist for months.

Why yes

At 186cm, left-footed and developed at La Masia, Gerard Martin has all the qualities to become a key player in Amorim’s new AC Milan. The defender, born in 2002, is highly regarded by the Rossoneri, so much so that former sporting director Tare had already started talks with Barcelona to assess whether the deal could be done. Martin and Gila are the two main options to lead the defence and help build play from the back.

First offer rejected

According to El Nacional, AC Milan have made a €20 million offer to Barcelona, but the Catalan club still view it as too low. Barca are understood to want around €35 million, although there is room to lower that figure, possibly through bonuses and a percentage of any future sale.

After playing 30 La Liga matches last season, Gerard Martin wants to remain at Barcelona, where he is still tied to a long-term contract until 2028, but the Blaugrana management have opened the door to a sale for financial reasons. AC Milan are also trying to move ahead of Chelsea in the race for him.
