The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an Engineering Analysis into General Motors’ eBoost braking system after continued consumer complaints about system failures in some of GM’s best-selling SUVs and pickup trucks, along with a few of its latest electric vehicles.
As per NHTSA filings, federal regulators have known about a possible issue linked to the eBoost system since April 2024, which was when Preliminary Evaluation PE24011 began. That earlier probe focused on model year 2023 Cadillac Lyriq EV models, where owners reported brake failure in their vehicles, with the brake pedal turning hard and a “Brake System Failure” warning appearing.
At that stage, GM provided information from its own internal review of the system, saying the problem was caused by broken spindles within the braking setup. According to GM’s findings, if a spindle fractured, the anti-lock braking system, stability control and traction control would all continue to function until the vehicle came to a complete halt. In theory, that situation would trigger one of three diagnostic trouble codes before warning the driver and restricting the vehicle’s speed to 43 mph.
Even so, ODI has kept receiving complaints from owners of other vehicles fitted with the eBoost system, and regulators say those reports do not match General Motors’ original understanding of the issue. These complaints include instances of immediate brake failure or loss of ABS while the vehicle is moving. Since either of these faults can raise the risk of a crash or injury, NHTSA believes a broader and more detailed examination of the system is required.
The investigation includes the following vehicles:
MY 2023–2026: Cadillac Lyriq; Chevrolet Colorado; GMC Canyon MY 2024–2026: Acura ZDX; Buick Enclave, Envision; Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Traverse; Cruise Origin; GMC Acadia; Honda Prologue MY 2025–2026: Cadillac Celestiq, Cadillac Optiq
That puts the estimated population covered by the investigation at 1,164,820 cars, trucks and SUVs. The hope now is that ODI can identify any potentially unsafe hardware so GM can make sure all of these vehicles are operating properly. With ODI also currently examining nearly one million trucks and SUVs fitted with GM’s L87 V-8 engine, the company may be facing a significant amount of repair work ahead.
