New Delhi: Aadhaar has become one of the most important identity documents for every citizen in India, including children. Whether it’s availing government schemes, school admissions, or health services — Aadhaar is now a must. However, many parents are still unaware of a crucial rule regarding Baal Aadhaar (Aadhaar for children).

If this important step is not completed after your child turns 5 years old, the child’s Aadhaar card may be deactivated.

Why is Baal Aadhaar Necessary?

Baal Aadhaar is issued to children below 5 years of age. It acts as their identity and is required for:

• School admissions

• Access to government schemes (like mid-day meal, health benefits)

• Other essential services

Important: Update Biometric Data After Age 5

When Aadhaar is issued for children under 5, only a photograph is taken — no biometric data like fingerprints or iris scans. But once the child crosses the age of 5 years, it becomes mandatory to update the Aadhaar with their biometric information.

Failure to update the biometrics can result in the Aadhaar card being deactivated.

Required Documents for Baal Aadhaar

• Child’s Birth Certificate

• Aadhaar Card of one parent

• Address Proof (electricity bill, bank statement, ration card, etc.)

Online Process to Apply for Baal Aadhaar

1️⃣ Visit the official UIDAI website: https://uidai.gov.in
2️⃣ Select Book Aadhaar Appointment to find the nearest Aadhaar Enrollment Centre.
3️⃣ Visit the centre with the child and required documents.
4️⃣ The child’s photo will be captured (no biometrics for kids under 5).
5️⃣ The Aadhaar card will be delivered via post or can be downloaded online.

Mandatory Updates:

• After 5 years: Biometric update (fingerprint and iris scan).

• After 15 years: Biometric re-verification.

If these updates are skipped, your child’s Aadhaar could become invalid for government schemes and identification purposes.
