Three police officers from the Nashik Police Headquarters were fired for engaging in sexual relations with two murder suspects when they were tasked with taking them to the police station, a startling violation of their duties. The police officers paid for the accused’s dinner at a wayside restaurant in addition to transporting them in a private vehicle.
On Monday, May 19, Commissioner of Police Sandeep Karnik issued orders dismissing Havildar Padmasingh Raul, Anmaldar Vicky Ravindra Chavan, and Deepak Ravindra Jathar for egregious wrongdoing that has damaged the department’s reputation.
Five police officers—Raul, Chavan, Jathar, and two others, Nikam and Nidhute—were tasked with escorting two murder suspects to the Nashik Road Court on Saturday, May 17. Serious murder charges filed in 2021 and 2024 feature the defendants, Sonu, also known as Prafulla Patil, and Kundan Arvind Ghare.
Raul reportedly instructed Nikam and Nidhute not to report for duty, however. In violation of procedure, the remaining three cops drove the accused in a private vehicle (MH15 EW 1990). Following the court hearings, they made a stop at a restaurant rather than returning the accused straight to Central Jail. There, the cops blatantly disregarded the law and abused their power by dining with the accused and covering their meals.
After learning about the occurrence, the Crime Branch opened an internal inquiry. According to the results, all three cops were convicted of abusing their authority and conspiring with criminals. Commissioner Karnik said in his ruling that severe punishment was required since their acts had severely harmed the public’s perception of the police.
Serious concerns have been raised by the occurrence about police accountability and security flaws while dealing with dangerous offenders.
