A 45-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a three-year-old girl in Kaikohe, Northland, following a tragic incident that has left the local community in shock.

Emergency services were called to a residence on Tawanui Road around 6:15 pm on Wednesday, where they found the young girl unresponsive. Despite immediate medical attention, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Senior Sergeant Christan Fouhy, Far North Area Manager of Investigations, confirmed the arrest and stated that the man is scheduled to appear in Kaikohe District Court on Monday, May 26. “We will continue our enquiries in the area over the next few days,” he said.

The investigation has mobilized a team of 20 officers, including personnel from other districts, to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the child's death.

A forensic examination of the property has been conducted, and police have indicated that inquiries in the area will persist in the coming days.

“These are always difficult investigations, for the whānau, community, and the police themselves,” said Detective Inspector Rhys Johnston of Northland CIB. “The investigators are determined to uncover the full facts.”

Victim Support is actively assisting the girl's family and the local community during this challenging time. “Victim Support is supporting the whānau and local community following this tragic death,” confirmed Detective Senior Sergeant Fouhy.

As the case is now before the courts, police have stated they cannot comment further on the matter.
