New Delhi/Bangalore: In an important decision, the Supreme Court has ordered Karnataka Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni to surrender within a week. The case is to the murder of a BJP worker in 2016, in which it is now alleged that the MLA tried to contact and influence the witnesses during the trial. Looking at the facts in the record, the court said that it is not appropriate to maintain bail now. The decision has come on a CBI petition seeking cancellation of bail.

The case started in 2016 with the murder of a BJP leader in Dharwad. The investigation initially took place at the local level, but was later assigned to the CBI. The investigating agency arrested the accused, expressing suspicion of political conspiracy in the case. In 2021, the Supreme Court granted bail on strict conditions, which included a distance from the witnesses and the ban on entry into the respective district. But recent incidents forced the court to take a decision again.

Allegations of affecting witnesses are serious

During the hearing, it was revealed that the accused contacted the witnesses using his wife, driver and gunman’s mobile. A picture was also cited in support of this claim in which he was seen with prominent persons. The court admitted that there are facts in the records that confirm efforts to influence witnesses. In such a situation, the court canceled the bail, calling the relief given earlier inappropriate.

Political career and legal battle

During the hearing of the case, the accused party argued that there is no direct evidence and they have fully supported the investigation. But the court, denying this, also directed the lower court to ensure that the trial would run in a fair manner and without any pressure. At the same time, the CBI said that by coming in contact with the witnesses, the accused tried to influence the justice process, which is a matter of serious concern.
