Enhanced Speed for UPI Payments
UPI payments to get faster: Starting today, sending and receiving money via UPI will become quicker. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced on April 26, 2025, that they are reducing the response time for UPI transactions. This improvement will benefit banks and payment service providers such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm. According to a circular issued by NPCI on April 26, transactions through UPI will be expedited from June 16, providing users with an enhanced experience. Let’s delve into the details.
Request Payment, Debit and Credit | 30 seconds | 15 seconds |
Check Transaction Status | 30 seconds | 10 seconds |
Transaction Reversal (Debit and Credit) | 30 seconds | 10 seconds |
Validate Address (Pay, Collect) | 15 seconds | 10 seconds |
New Rules After July
As per NPCI's circular dated May 21, 2025, further changes will be implemented in UPI starting August. Banks and payment service providers must ensure proper management of UPI API requests to maintain transaction speed and volume. What changes can we expect?
- Balance Check: Each user will be able to check their balance via the UPI app up to 50 times a day.
- List Accounts: Users can view a list of linked accounts from their mobile devices.
- Auto-Payment: For auto-payments, each mandate will allow one attempt and three retries, which will occur during non-peak hours.
- NPCI Directives: NPCI has mandated that all banks and partners implement these changes by July 31, 2025.
Reasons for the Changes
UPI is the most widely used digital payment system in India. NPCI aims to enhance user experience, necessitating banks and payment service providers to update their systems to ensure faster transactions without issues. Starting June 16, 2025, UPI will become even more efficient, making payments easier for everyone.
