New Delhi: WhatsApp is developing a new feature called ‘Writing Help’ based on AI and intended to improve the quality of outgoing messages without accessing user data at all. This tool will be available in a future release and will enable users to write better-toned, grammatically correct and clear messages with the assistance of Meta AI and processed in the secure Private Processing system of WhatsApp. The feature was identified in the latest WhatsApp beta release on Android 2.25.19.8 version and will help improve communication without affecting user privacy.
Writing Help is the latest feature in WhatsApp, after it introduced AI-based summaries of messages. Similarly to that aspect, it will use encrypted processing that would not transfer message data out of the device or to the Meta servers. This update continues providing smarter communication tools without any compromise to users control and privacy.
Writing assistant built into the keyword
After being activated in settings, Writing Help will be available through a new button in the emoji keyboard. It will tap to activate the AI assistant that will enable users to do a fine-tuning of their message in different tones prior to sending. The tones one can choose are ‘professional’, ‘funny’ and ‘supportive’; they are used when sending the formal message, playful chat and empathetic talk, respectively. The assistant can also correct grammar or explain wording and provide up to three versions of the message that are rewritten.
Completely private and optional
Meta AI enables the feature using Private Processing, which is a system with anonymous routing and encrypted requests. The messages under analysis and enhanced recommendations will not be available to WhatsApp or Meta. The users are not out of control either; the only message a user wants to edit is processed, and no automatic changes take place. Also, anyone who makes the choice can provide feedback to make the feature better, without sending original or edited message content.
In later updates, WhatsApp can add the list of available tones so that users will have more freedom to express themselves in the way they communicate. Whether it is a professional communication or casual chatting, Writing Help wants to ensure that the online chats are more understandable, expressive and contextual. This is one of the features being developed and will be available in a later update after the feature is tested.
