Haridwar. The second marriage of former MLA and BJP leader Suresh Rathore from Jwalapur assembly seat in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand has come into controversy. Rathore has recently made a public announcement to love marriage to actress Urmila Sanawar, a resident of Saharanpur. He said in a press conference in Saharanpur on 15 June that he considers Urmila Sanawar as his wife. Urmila Sanawar was also present with him during this period. After this, this issue in Uttarakhand got caught up politically. The Congress, considering it a violation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC Law), demanded action against its former MLA Suresh Rathore from BJP.

BJP issued notice

Seeing the party’s disinterest in the case, BJP State General Secretary Rajendra Bisht has issued a notice of indiscipline on Suresh Rathore on the instructions of BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt (BJP State President Mahendra Bhatt). State General Secretary of Uttarakhand BJP Rajendra Bisht has issued this notice seeking a reply from Rathore within 7 days. The notice states that the party’s image is getting tarnished due to his indefinite conduct. Actually, this matter has also become important because Uttarakhand is the first state in the country, where Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been implemented. In such a situation, Rathore’s second marriage can be under investigation under UCC rules. Suresh Rathore is already married, although this is also the second marriage of Urmila Rathore.

Second wife posted on social media

On the other hand, the statement of Urmila Sanawar has come out in the case. He has said in a post written to the BJP state president through social media that I want to bring to your information that I had married Gandharva with former MLA Suresh Rathore ji at Pashupatinath temple in Nepal on 4 October 2022. This marriage took place according to our mutual consent and religious customs. After this marriage, there was a discussion about our relations in social media and public forums for almost two years. Finally, on 15 June 2025, Suresh Rathore ji gave public approval of our 2022 marriage to the media, which I have been accepting for a long time.

‘No provision of UCC did not violate’

Apart from this, he said that some people are deliberately spreading confusion about this marriage and claiming that the marriage took place on 15 June 2025, while the situation is that the marriage was held in 2022 itself. It is noteworthy that Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttarakhand has come into force from 27 January 2025, while we were married long before that. Therefore, no provision of UCC has been violated. It is also unfortunate that when some prominent politicians like Harish Rawat, Narayan Dutt Tiwari, Digvijay Singh and other leaders take place, there are no questions on them. But when a Dalit woman marries a Dalit leader, it is objected to. This is socially unfair.
