Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has called for unwavering support towards newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill. Amid scrutiny following India’s loss in the opening Test against England, Shastri urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and team management to give Gill at least a three-year window to prove his mettle.
Gill, 25, began his captaincy stint with a glittering century—becoming only the fifth Indian to score a ton on Test captaincy debut. But his efforts were eclipsed by England’s historic fourth-innings chase of 371, leading to a five-wicket defeat at Lord’s.
Speaking to Wisden, Shastri emphasized the importance of continuity in leadership. Shastri said,
“He’s matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses—he’s matured a lot. Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you.”

England Win Sparks Criticism, But Shastri Sees Potential in Gill
Despite a confident individual outing, Gill faced sharp criticism for his captaincy tactics—particularly his field placements and bowling changes under pressure. Yet, Shastri was categorical in his endorsement of Gill’s leadership potential and technical finesse. He added,
“I’ll be disappointed if Gill doesn’t go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he’s got a regal element of being regal out there when he’s batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that’s the one name I can see.”
India now move to Edgbaston, Birmingham, for the second Test beginning July 2. The venue holds grim history—India have never won a Test match there, suffering seven defeats in eight appearances. Gill and his side face a stiff challenge not just from England, but also the weight of legacy.
With India trailing 0-1 in the five-Test series, all eyes remain on how Gill navigates the setbacks, both tactical and statistical. However, for Shastri, the message remains clear: back the youngster and give him time.
