Word is, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to play in the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2, according to ESPNCricinfo.
The team has already said Bumrah will only play three Tests because they’re watching his workload and he’s had injuries before. They haven’t said which matches those will be, but ESPNCricinfo heard that he probably won’t be playing in the second Test. During the Leeds Test, Bumrah snagged five wickets in the first innings but didn’t get any while defending 371 runs, bowling almost 44 overs total.
ESPNCricinfo says India practiced on Friday after travelling, doing a five-hour training session. Bumrah was there but didn’t bowl or bat. The session was closed, so it wasn’t clear if he did fitness drills or bowled alone. You could see the session from a street nearby. Mohammed Siraj batted, then joined Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna inside.
ESPNCricinfo also says Bumrah’s chances of playing on July 2 are slim. The plan was for him to play the first and third Tests, then decide about the fourth or fifth based on how the series is going. There are long breaks between the first and second Tests and the third and fourth Tests – seven to eight days each.
He’s not totally ruled out for Edgbaston, and they haven’t started discussing the lineup yet. If he’s feeling good, he might play the Test. There’s optional training on Saturday, then another session on Monday.
Left-arm pacers Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep bowled a lot in the nets, with Arshdeep bowling a lot with an old ball, going around the wicket to right-handers. India might be doing this because of the Birmingham conditions, expecting reverse swing to be a factor.
The team isn’t dwelling too much on the Headingley loss, even though there were some good performances. The message is to not change their playing style too much, but to keep doing what they’re doing to get into good positions and react better.
