Seven top players set to miss Wimbledon including Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer's nemesis

Wimbledon will welcome most of the world's best tennis stars over the coming days. Action is due to finally get underway tomorrow, with Carlos Alcaraz due on Centre Court to face Italian veteran Fabio Fognini from 1.30pm.

However, fans will notice that the Championships are absent of some familiar names this year. Express Sport takes a look at who has withdrawn from the tournament.

Nick Kyrgios

Perhaps the most recognisable face among active players not competing at the Championships, Kyrgios described pulling out of this year's tournament as "heartbreaking". A knee injury is the reason behind his decision to withdraw.

A finalist in 2022, the Australian has struggled with injuries over the past few years and missed almost the entire 2024 season. He plans to be fit for the US Open later this year.

Casper Ruud

Ruud exacerbated a left knee injury at the French Open and will miss Wimbledon this year. Attempting to build on the high of winning his first Masters 1000 title in Madrid, the Norwegian was knocked out in the second round at Roland Garros.

He made the issue worse in the meantime and has had to skip Wimbledon this year. It is unclear when the former world No. 2 plans to return.

Arthur Fils

World No. 16 Fils found himself in a similar predicament in Paris. He valiantly battled through a back injury to overcome a gruelling five-setter against Jaume Munar, but his perseverance came at a horrible price.

Fils has not played since and decided to withdraw from Wimbledon to fully recover.

Hubert Hurkacz

Hurkacz famously announced himself to the Wimbledon crowd by thrashing Roger Federer in the 2021 quarter-final. By that point, Federer was 39 and was coming to the end of his career. He never played at Wimbledon again.

Four years on, it is Hurkacz who is struggling. Only hours after he was drawn to face British star Billy Harris in the first round, the Polish No. 1 recently underwent surgery on his knee. A membrane issue is now set to keep him out of this year's Wimbledon. The 28-year-old will still bank £33,000 for being drawn in the first round.

Zhang Zhizhen

A second-round loser at Wimbledon last year, former world No. 31 Zhang will not be in South London this time around. A shoulder injury has prevented him from playing since Indian Wells earlier this year, and his ranking has taken a tumble. It is unclear when the 28-year-old will return to the court.

Emil Ruusuvuori

In February, Ruusuvuori returned to tennis after a six-month absence for personal reasons. He reached a career-high No. 34 last year but decided to step back from the ATP Tour to take care of his "physical and mental health".

Ruusivuori has not competed since a Challenger Tour event in Zagreb over a month ago and withdrew from Wimbledon earlier this month.

Anhelina Kalinina

Kalinina is the only woman to withdraw from Wimbledon this year. The former world No. 25 has twice reached the second round at the All England Club but a recent injury saw her pull out. The 28-year-old Ukrainian recently retired from a WTA 250 event in Bari, Italy.
