Weather Updates Today: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert in several states today. The IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rains in parts of Himachal Pradesh , warning of possible flooding, rise in river levels and landslides in several districts. Sandeep Kumar Sharma, a senior scientist at the IMD’s Shimla centre, said the state received widespread rainfall in the last 24 hours, with some areas recording intense rainfall.

Sharma said, “Almost all areas of Himachal Pradesh received rainfall during the last 24 hours . The highest rainfall was recorded in Palampur at 76 mm, followed by Banjar at 75 mm. Sirmaur recorded moderate rainfall of around 55 mm. People should stay away from rivers and streams; the threat of landslides still persists.”

In northwest India, extremely heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places over Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh on June 30. Additionally, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh from June 28 to July 4.

Heavy rainfall is also likely over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh between June 28 and July 2; western Rajasthan on June 28, July 3 and 4; and eastern Rajasthan from July 1 to 4. Very heavy rainfall is also forecast over Himachal Pradesh on June 29 and 30; Uttarakhand from June 28 to July 2; Punjab on June 29; Haryana and Chandigarh on June 29 and 30; Uttar Pradesh on June 29, July 1 and 2; and eastern Rajasthan on July 3 and 4.

Throughout the week, most parts of northwest India are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by frequent thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph.

Eastern and Central India

In east and central India, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha from June 29 to July 4; over Vidarbha on July 1 and 2; and over Andaman and Nicobar Islands on June 28. Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive heavy rainfall on June 29 and then again from June 30 to July 2, according to the IMD.

West Bengal may receive heavy rainfall from June 29 to July 1, while similar conditions are expected in Bihar from June 29 to July 4.

Very heavy rainfall is forecast in western Madhya Pradesh on June 29, July 1 and 2 and in eastern Madhya Pradesh on June 28 and July 1 to 4. Chhattisgarh is also expected to receive very heavy rainfall on July 1 and 2.

In the eastern region, Gangetic West Bengal is likely to receive very heavy rainfall on June 29 and 30, while Bihar is expected to receive rain from June 29 to July 2. Additionally, Jharkhand may receive very heavy rainfall from June 29 to July 1 and Odisha from June 28 to July 1.

Northeast India

In Northeast India, light to moderate rainfall with frequent thunderstorms and lightning is likely at most places during the next seven days.

Heavy rainfall is also expected at isolated places over the region during this period. In addition, very heavy rainfall is forecast over Arunachal Pradesh on July 2 and 3, over Assam and Meghalaya on July 2 to 4 and over Nagaland on July 1 and 2.

South India

Over southern peninsular India, heavy rainfall is likely over Tamil Nadu on June 28, over Kerala and Mahe on June 29, July 3 and 4, and over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka on July 2-4.

Strong surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph are likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe on 29th June and over interior Karnataka, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema and Telangana from 29th June to 2nd July.

With the monsoon in full swing, the IMD has urged people to remain alert, follow official warnings and take precautions by avoiding risky areas such as river banks and landslide-prone areas.
