If you are still using an old Android phone running on Android 8 (Oreo) or Android 9 (Pie) and use the Google Chrome browser, then you need to upgrade your phone soon. Google has officially announced that it is ending support for Chrome for devices running on these older Android versions. From the first week of August 2025, Chrome will require Android 10 or higher to receive updates.

This change will take effect with the release of Chrome 139, which is expected to come around August 5, 2025. According to this, Chrome 138 will be the final version for Android 8 and 9 users. Although this old browser version will continue to work for the time being, it will not get any security patches, upgrades or new features in the future.

What does this mean?

If you're still using a phone on Android 8 or 9, Chrome won't stop working overnight, but it won't be updated and secure. Over time, a lack of updates can leave you vulnerable to bugs or security flaws, especially if you browse frequently or do sensitive work online.

Google advised in a post on its support page:

Google said in a post on its support page that we encourage users on Android 8.0 or 9.0 to upgrade to Android 10.0 or later to keep receiving Chrome updates. According to data from April 2025, Android 9 is still active on 6% of Android phones, while Android 8 and 8.1 together account for about 4%. This means that about 1 in 10 Android users will miss out on future Chrome improvements.
