Smartphones have become an important part of our lives, but their excessive use is giving rise to many problems, especially for children. Keeping this in mind, California, one of the largest states in America, has now banned the use of smartphones in schools. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the future of children and their mental health. According to a report, screen time among children has increased significantly in India too.
When studies shifted online during the Covid pandemic, children became addicted to smartphones. Now when classes have gone offline again, children are still bringing mobile phones to the classroom. Due to this, they are not able to concentrate on their studies, as they are busy using social media or playing games. This problem is not limited to California only but is also being seen in India.
60 lakh children will be affected
California Governor Gavin Newsom has recently signed a bill, under which schools have the right to limit or completely ban the use of smartphones. This decision is the result of long-standing demands. The Los Angeles County School Board banned the use of smartphones in the classroom in June this year, which affected 4,29,000 students. Now in California, this law will ban smartphones in schools for about 6 million children. California is not the only one to take this step. According to the report of Education Week, 13 states of America have banned bringing mobile phones to school this year or have limited their use.
Disadvantages of increased screen time
Excessive use of smartphones can increase problems like anxiety, depression, and social isolation in children. Comparing yourself with others on social media can lead to a decrease in self-esteem.
Watching content or playing games at high volume with headphones for a long time can have a negative impact on hearing ability.
Having a phone in the classroom diverts children's attention from studies. They remain busy playing games or social media, which has a bad effect on their academic performance.
Using the phone late at night disrupts sleep patterns, which can make children feel tired and irritable.
Continuous phone use can cause eye strain, neck and back pain, and reduced physical activity, increasing the risk of obesity.
