Doctor's Day: Before the rounds begin, a doctor's daily dose of wellness

As doctors, we often remind our patients to eat well, sleep enough, and manage stress yet forget to prioritize the same for ourselves. Over time, I have realized that consistency, not perfection, is what sustains wellness in a demanding profession like ours.

It is important for every doctor to try incorporating some form of physical activity into their day be it a morning walk, a short workout, or stretching between shifts. Even 30–60 minutes of movement can offer a much-needed reset, improving both physical health and mental clarity. My daily routine begins with 60 minutes of exercise, usually running or cycling. That one hour is my physical and mental reset, keeping my lungs strong and mind sharp. It’s also the quietest time of the day just me, my breath, and the road. This movement fuels my energy before I dive into hospital rounds, clinics, and procedures.

When it comes to diet, the guiding principle is usually simple: eat real, balanced, and nourishing meals. While hectic routines can lead to missed meals or quick fixes, many doctors prioritize home-cooked food, seasonal fruits, nuts, and staying hydrated throughout the day. Keeping healthy snacks handy and avoiding excessive caffeine or processed foods goes a long way in maintaining energy levels.

Mental wellness has become a personal mission. We are surrounded by sickness, death, and high-pressure decision-making yet rarely talk about its emotional toll. What works for me is journaling for five minutes a day, sharing thoughts with a close friend, and saying ‘no’ when I need to protect my peace.
On Doctor’s Day, I remind myself and my colleagues that taking care of ourselves is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. After all, we cannot pour from an empty cup. When doctors model healthy living, we don’t just give advice we live it.
