Why PSG's big win against Lionel Messi's Inter Miami was good news for Tottenham

PSG ran riot against Inter Miami in the Club World Cup on Sunday and unlikely as it may seem that victory was actually good news in a way for Tottenham.

The Champions League winners were already 4-0 up at half-time and it remained that way in the round of 16 encounter thanks to a double strike from Joao Neves, an own goal from Tomas Aviles and then a goal before the interval from Achraf Hakimi after his initial shot was deflected on to the crossbar. Inter Miami had Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, both now 38, up front but they could only provide moments of excitement for their fans, particularly in the second half, amid the PSG dominance.

The victory puts the Paris side into the quarter-finals next weekend and despite the terrifying nature of their performance, that is good news in a way for Tottenham, who will play Luis Enrique's side in around six weeks' time.

Thomas Frank'sfirst competitive match at the helm of Spurs will be the UEFA Super Cup final as the Europa League winners face the Champions League victors in Udine on Wednesday August 13. PSG will provide a fearsome first test for the Frank era at the club but there is a reason Spurs will want their opponents to be successful in the competition currently taking place in the USA.

For if PSG get through their quarter-final, then they will take part in the semi-finals to be played on either June 8 or 9. A victory there would take Enrique's team through the final of the Club World Cup on Sunday July 13 at the MetLife Stadium in New York.

Now the way FIFA rules work after tournaments is that players must have at least three weeks off before returning to their clubs. So if PSG were to reach the final of the Club World Cup then the three weeks of rest, if they take the bare minimum, would see the French club's players only returning to pre-season training from August 4 or 5 onwards.

They may well get longer after a longer than normal and gruelling season with so many matches. Even if they don't then that would leave just nine days to get sharp for the game against Tottenham in Italy. That could be a small advantage for the north London outfit to take into a game against the best side in the game right now and they'll take anything ahead of that big match.
