Devotees Flock to Puri Despite Recent Tragedy

In Puri, following a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to around 50 others during a stampede near the Shree Gundicha temple, thousands of devotees gathered on Monday to seek blessings from the sibling deities—Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra, and Lord Jagannath.

To ensure safety after the unfortunate event, authorities have set up barricades in front of the Shree Gundicha temple and established separate lines for a smoother darshan experience at the 'Adapa Mandap', where the deities are displayed, according to a senior police official.

Soumendra Priyadarshi, an ADG-rank IPS officer tasked with overseeing security during the Rath Yatra, expressed confidence in the arrangements, stating, "We are vigilant... by the grace of the Lord, everything is proceeding without issues. Devotees are entering the Shree Gundicha Temple seamlessly."

This assignment was given to him by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi in response to the stampede.

Devotees hold the belief that witnessing Lord Jagannath from the 'Adapa Mandap' can absolve them of their sins.

The stampede occurred early Sunday morning around 4:20 AM, as a large crowd of devotees had gathered near the chariots stationed outside the temple, officials reported.
