ABP Live Business | June 30, 2025 8:11 PM CST

As the Islamic New Year approaches, India is preparing to observe Muharram, one of the most sacred months in the Islamic calendar. The observance date is currently set for July 6 (Sunday), but it could shift to July 7 (Monday) depending on the sighting of the crescent moon.

This annual holiday, which marks the first day of Muharram in the Hijri calendar, will be recognized as a public holiday across the country, with closures expected in the stock market, banks, schools, government institutions, post offices, and various private offices.

As the final date hinges on moon sighting, states with significant Muslim populations—such as West Bengal, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra—are expected to issue specific guidelines. People are advised to monitor district notifications and school circulars for accurate local updates on the holiday.

Markets And Financial Services To Remain Shut

India’s financial markets will remain non-operational on Muharram. Both BSE and NSE will be closed for trading across equity, equity derivatives, currency and interest rate derivatives, and SLB segments on July 6. If the date change stock exchange is expected to announce the update before July 7, 2025.

Banks and financial institutions will also remain shut, impacting public transactions and banking services. Citizens are encouraged to complete urgent financial tasks in advance to avoid inconvenience.

About Muharram

Muharram, among the four holiest months in Islam, marks the beginning of the Islamic year. The tenth day, Ashura, holds deep historical and emotional resonance, especially among Shia Muslims. It commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was slain in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD.

On this day, Muslim communities across India engage in mourning rituals, processions, and special prayers, reflecting on themes of sacrifice, justice, and resilience. Due to regional differences in moon sightings, the final date of Muharram observance often varies slightly, adding to public anticipation. Once confirmed, the holiday will be marked nationwide as a day of solemnity and significance.
