Xdinary Heroes member under fire for racist comments
Junhan, a member of the idol group Xdinary Heroes, recently faced a lot of backlash for making alleged racist comments in his messages. On June 28, while conversing with fans using a paid fan forum application, the idol racially profiled Black people when he was talking about scientific research.
The idol stated in his messages that Black people are better at music due to the ‘fact’ that they have “more cells in their ears”. The comment sparked a lot of outrage among netizens online. He also commented about eugenics, a discredited theory that has been proven to be racially biased.
In his comments, he talked about combining and mixing up good “qualities” from people of different ethnic backgrounds, specifically pointing towards Black, White, and Asian/Indian people.
Idol issues apology online, faces continuous criticism
Soon after, when Junhan’s comments started garnering a lot of attention online and faced a lot of backlash, he issued a handwritten apology to the public. This action, however, ended up backfiring and caused the idol and his group to face even more criticism online.
His statement read, “First of all, I sincerely apologise for the hurt and discomfort my careless remarks have caused many people. I’ve come to realise that what I said reflected a biased perspective, and I am deeply reflecting on it. I want to offer my sincerest apologies once again to those who were hurt or offended by my lack of historical knowledge, social awareness, and sensitivity.”
He continued, sharing that he will be more mindful of his actions and will continue to learn and grow from his mistakes.
Netizens react to the comments and apology
Many people took to online social media platforms in order to share their opinions on the matter. One netizen commented, “A Korean supporting eugenics… And trying to teach that ideology through Bubble messages… "Ignorant and harmful", while another stated that “The problem isn’t just a slip of the tongue; it feels like he’s expressing a belief he’s held for a long time." That’s what makes it feel real and serious.”
