Tragic Impact of Monsoon in Punjab

Lahore: The recent monsoon rains in Pakistan's Punjab province have resulted in the tragic loss of 18 lives, including 11 children, with 57 others injured due to rain-related incidents over the past day, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).

The PDMA's report highlighted that many fatalities were caused by the collapse of old buildings and rooftops.

In addition, the rainfall has led to damage to 27 homes. The agency noted that lightning strikes in Khanewal and Okara resulted in two deaths, while two children were electrocuted in Mandi Bahauddin.

Weather forecasts indicate potential urban flooding in major cities such as Lahore, Sialkot, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. The PDMA's Director General has issued a contingency alert for these urban areas and has prohibited swimming and bathing in rivers, canals, and drainage systems.

In Karachi, widespread water accumulation and overflowing sewage systems have made commuting difficult for residents, with many neighborhoods submerged and emitting unpleasant odors as the city grapples with the monsoon rains.

While the residents of Karachi welcomed the much-needed rain after a prolonged heatwave, the recent downpours have unfortunately led to fatalities and injuries, as reported by local news outlets.

Residents have expressed frustration over the local administration's inadequate response, with heaps of uncollected garbage littering major towns, posing a significant health risk.

Reports indicate that in various localities, roads have either collapsed or suffered severe damage due to waterlogging. In Korangi Town, the situation is particularly dire, with roads in Qayyumabad experiencing significant damage and parts of streets giving way.

Similar conditions have been observed in other areas, where many locations have become nearly impassable due to failing infrastructure, as noted by the Pakistani daily Express Tribune.

The rains have not only highlighted the poor preparedness of municipal authorities but have also created substantial hardships for residents. Large piles of garbage have been reported in Gulberg, Nazimabad, and parts of Malir, exacerbating the crisis.

Analysts suggest that these rains have once again exposed the critical issues surrounding Karachi's deteriorating infrastructure and the ongoing delays in development projects, alongside a lack of coordination among civic agencies.
