Can Joao Pedro play in Club World Cup for Chelsea? FIFA rules explained after £55m transfer
Football | June 30, 2025 11:39 PM CST

Chelsea are set to almost quadruple their summer spending in the space of a week as both Joao Pedro and Jamie Gittens prepare to join Enzo Maresca's squad. They will follow Liam Delap in making the move to Stamford Bridge.

From a £30million spend - not accounting for the deals of Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr, who both agreed to join much earlier this year from Sporting CP (via Las Palmas) and RC Strasbourg, respectively - Chelsea will soon have splashed out £140million on players. They have already earned close to £50million for competing at the Club World Cup.

Add in Champions League qualification, which is worth a minimum of £14million simply for entering the group stages, and Chelsea's finances are in good order. Despite not having a front-of-shirt sponsor, the Blues have plenty of leeway.

After selling their women's team in a strategic repositioning ploy during 2023/24, there is no risk of non-compliance with the Premier League profitability and sustainability rules (PSRs). Both Pedro and Gittens could cost up to £55million if all add-ons are met.

The pair will sign seven-year contracts and add strength to Maresca's attack, especially on the left flank.Chelsea are currently two right-footed left-wingers down on last season after Jadon Sancho's loan did not become permanent and Mykhailo Mudryk remains indefinitely suspended.

Tyrique George is still a raw prospect in the position whilst Noni Madueke has been filling in. Both he and Pedro Neto prefer the right side, where Estevao Willian will also play.

Pedro acts as additional cover for Cole Palmer centrally or as further striker backup. He can play in a variety of roles which Chelsea saw as being extremely valuable.

He is now readying to make the switch from Brighton. If all goes to plan, he could make his debut later this wee. Chelsea will be able to add Pedro to their Club World Cup squad as long as he is registered by July 3. That deadline is two days before they face Palmeiras in the quarter-finals on Saturday morning. Pedro could, if all is completed, play some part in that game.

Winning it would bank an additional £15million for Chelsea, which goes some way to offsetting their latest expansive recruitment drive.Chelsea are still interested in a host of other players across the attack and defence.

Whereas Pedro could be in the side sooner rather than later, if all goes to plan, Gittens will have to wait. He was named in Borussia Dortmund's squad for the competition in America and FIFA rules state that players cannot represent two clubs.

Even with the second registration window ahead of the knockout stages starting over the weekend, Gittens is essentially cup-tied. He has only made one brief cameo appearance for Dortmund off the bench.

They play Monterrey on Wednesday morning but Gittens is unlikely to feature with a deal agreed with Chelsea. Gittens was left out of Niko Kovac's matchday squad for the 1-0 win over Ulsan HD last week.

Gittens can join his new teammates at base camp and train with them but will not be able to play in matches. Currently, Chelsea's only friendly matches for the rest of the summer are the weekend before the Premier League starts.

They welcome Milan and Bayer Leverkusen to SW6 with two games over three days. That might be the first chance Gittens has to test himself on the field. Pedro, on the other hand, has the added incentive of trying to go the distance in USA.

It will both kickstart and prolong an initial pre-season which is interrupted the moment Chelsea lose. Pedro might not have been a player Chelsea have chased as long as Gittens - who was angered at the failure of Dortmund to sell him before the group stage and June 10's initial deadline - but he will get first stab at establishing himself in blue.
