
The former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the Pakistan’s acting red-ball coach ahead of side starting the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
Following Jason Gillespie’s exit as Pakistan’s red-ball head coach, Aaqib Javed had taken over the role. But Mahmood steps in the position following his stint as Pakistan’s bowling coach and later being the assistant head coach.
“A seasoned cricketing mind, Azhar Mahmood steps into the role with an impressive portfolio of experience,” said a PCB statement.
“His deep knowledge of the game, combined with hands-on international exposure and proven success in the English county circuit, make him exceptionally well-suited for this position, said PCB in statement.
“His red-ball pedigree is underscored by two County Championship titles – an achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, tactical acumen and unwavering commitment to excellence,” it added.
“The PCB is confident that under Azhar’s guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage,” the statement.
Mahmood’s first series will be against South Africa in the year for a two match-tour as a part of new WTC cycle.
Azhar Mahmood has played 21 tests and 143 ODIs picking 39 and 123 wickets respectively.
His red-ball experience is highlighted by two County Championship titles and achievement that speaks volumes about his leadership, and unwavering commitment.
The Board is confident that under former all-rounder guidance, the red-ball squad will continue to grow in strength, discipline and performance on the global stage.
