Allegations Rock Kolkata Law College
Kolkata Law College has become the center of attention following a 24-year-old student's allegations of rape against Monojit Mishra. A wall graffiti stating, "Monojit Dada lives in our hearts," reflects the sentiments within the college, which is currently embroiled in controversy due to a gang rape incident involving a law student. Known as "Mango" among his peers, Monojit reportedly maintained an unchecked influence in the college years after graduating. Students claim he instilled fear in many and that previous complaints of harassment and abuse against him were allegedly ignored.
From Priest's Son to Campus Bully
Monojit's father, Robin Mishra, serves as a priest at the Kalighat Temple, while his mother suffers from neurological issues. In an interview, Robin expressed his disappointment, stating he worked hard to provide Monojit with a good education, only to sever ties due to his political involvement and aggressive behavior. Monojit, also known by the nickname Papai, had been living separately for four years, only returning to collect documents. Neighbors described him as a habitual troublemaker, often seen intoxicated and involved in fights. Reports suggest he had a girlfriend who was a lawyer and frequently visited him.
How a Promising Student Became a Campus Leader
Initially aspiring to become a lawyer, Monojit enrolled in Kolkata Law College in 2007, expecting to graduate by 2012. However, his focus shifted to student politics, particularly after the Trinamool Congress came to power in 2011. He dropped out before completing his course, re-enrolled in 2017, and finally graduated in 2022. His father revealed that Monojit spent more time on campus than in court. Despite a violent incident leading to the dissolution of the college's party unit in 2017, his loyal followers ensured his significant influence remained intact.
Maintaining Influence Without an Official Position
Interestingly, Monojit was appointed as a casual clerical staff member at the college in 2023, just a year after graduation, earning 500 rupees a day. Questions arose regarding why a trained lawyer would accept such a position, but many believe his long-standing influence in the college corridors made it possible.
Inappropriate Advances on Campus
Reports indicate that Monojit frequently used the Bengali pickup line, "Tui Amay Biye Korbi?" ("Will you marry me?") on female students, including the 24-year-old woman he allegedly raped. Students reported that Monojit secretly took pictures of female students, morphed them, and circulated them in WhatsApp groups. His gang would then spread rumors about these girls, body-shaming them, which left many in shock and fearful of attending college.
Details of the Incident on June 25
In her complaint, the rape victim alleged that on June 25, around 7 PM, Monojit, along with co-accused Pramit Mukherjee and Jaib Ahmed, lured her into the college union room. Once inside, Monojit reportedly demanded she prove her loyalty to the TMC student wing. Sensing danger, she attempted to leave but was forcibly pulled into another room where she was sexually assaulted. The victim also stated that the accused recorded the incident and threatened her to keep quiet. Meanwhile, medical tests conducted on the victim corroborated her claims of rape. So far, four individuals, including a college security guard, have been arrested.
