Prospects for Improved US-Turkey Relations
The United States may soon extend a significant offer to Turkey, which has distanced itself from Iran during the ongoing conflict. Speculation suggests that by the end of the year, there could be positive developments regarding the long-standing tensions surrounding the F-35 fighter jet program. Additionally, there may be a relaxation of CAATSA sanctions. This information was confirmed by Tom Barrack, the US ambassador in Ankara and special representative for Syria.
While visiting the historic Kemeralti market in Izmir, Barrack spoke with a news agency, indicating that bilateral discussions and diplomatic engagement between the leaders of both nations could yield tangible results by the end of 2025. He noted that both presidents are eager to finalize the F-35 fighter jet deal, and the US Senate is also seeking a favorable resolution.
Background of Tensions Between Turkey and the US
Tensions between Turkey and the US primarily stem from the F-35 fighter jet program. Turkey had been included in this program and made an advance payment of $1.4 billion. Although the US had prepared six F-35 jets, they were never delivered to Turkey. This situation arose after Turkey purchased the S-400 air defense system from Russia, which the US deemed a threat to its security, leading to Turkey's removal from the F-35 agreement. Despite this, Turkey has not received a refund for its initial payment, and CAATSA sanctions were imposed, restricting US exports and limiting financial transactions.
Moving Forward from the F-35 Issue
Ambassador Barrack expressed optimism about moving past the F-35 program's complications and the CAATSA sanctions. He believes that by the end of this year, both nations will make progress on these issues. Turkey has already made payments for F-16s and has contributed to the manufacturing of F-35 parts, demonstrating its reliability. For the first time, there is a shared commitment to act as regional leaders, not just as defense partners, between the US and Turkey.
Turkey's Role in Middle East Stability
Barrack indirectly praised Turkey for its stance on Iran, suggesting that the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel could represent a pivotal moment. He emphasized the need for a new path in the Middle East, with Turkey playing a crucial role. He also mentioned that a ceasefire in Gaza is expected soon.
