A surprise inspection at an old-age home in Sector 55, Noida, on Friday, revealed the deplorable conditions in which the elderly residents were living, according to Meenakshi Bharala, Member of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission. Bharala shared that during the visit, she saw a woman who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, while another inmate was locked inside the room. She added that the Ashram never conducted any medical check-ups of the inmates, she told ANI.
Times Now learned from Bharala that the commission had received complaints regarding the senior citizens facing inhumane behaviour by the staff, which prompted an investigation. During this, officials found that the elderly were subjected to inhumane treatment, denied timely medical attention, and deprived of necessities such as clothing.
According to the officials, the old-age home was running illegally under the name of Anand Niketan Vridha Seva Ashram, C-5, in Noida. Residents alleged that they were mistreated for raising objections against the staff for not performing their duties.
The residents also revealed that the ashram collected substantial sums in donations and monthly fees, including a Rs 2.5 lakh donation, Rs 20,000 security deposit, and Rs 10,000– Rs 12,000 per month from each resident.
What Action Has Been Taken?
A total of 42 elderly individuals were found residing at the ashram. Dr. Bharala announced that three of the residents will be relocated to a government-approved old age home run by the Social Welfare Department on June 27, while the remaining residents will be shifted to other authorised facilities within the next five days.Dr. Bharala confirmed that the illegal old-age home will be sealed with administrative assistance once all residents are relocated. The inspection was conducted in the presence of ACP Manisha, District Women Police Station President Sandeepa Chaudhary, and officials from the District Social Welfare and Probation Departments.
The Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has assured that further action will be taken to ensure the safety and well-being of the elderly and to prevent the operation of unauthorised facilities in the future.
