Surrey County Cricket Club made history on Monday by recording their highest-ever first-class total of 820/9 declared at the Kia Oval, surpassing the previous county record of 811 set in 1899.

Dom Sibley anchored the innings with a marathon 305, supported by explosive centuries from Dan Lawrence (178) and Will Jacks (119). Resuming on day two at 407/3, Surrey powered past the long-standing record shortly after tea, batting in oppressive 30°C heat that tested Durham’s resolve.

  • 863 – Lancashire v Surrey, The Oval (1990)

  • 820-9 declared – Surrey v Durham, The Oval (2025)

In reply, Durham ended the day at 59/1 in 28 overs. Matt Fisher provided the early breakthrough, removing Emilio Gay for seven. Surrey, however, missed chances to tighten their grip.Alex Lees was dropped on 11 by Jordan Clark, and Will Rhodes survived on 16 after a slip by Sibley.

Sibley and Lawrence added 334 runs in just 53 overs for the fourth wicket, setting a new Surrey record against Durham. Lawrence raced from 58 to a career-best 178, hitting 19 fours and four sixes before falling to Daniel Hogg. Jack's joined the assault with a brisk 119 off 94 balls, featuring four sixes, adding 133 with Sibley in just 21 overs.

Sibley’s innings was a masterclass in controlled accumulation. Hiss 475-ball stay included 29 fours and two sixes. It marked the eighth triple century in Surrey’s history and placed him seventh on the club’s list of highest individual scorers, alongside greats like Bobby Abel, Jack Hobbs, and Kevin Pietersen.

Surrey’s 820/9 also stands as the highest-ever first-class total against Durham, eclipsing Warwickshire’s 810/4 declared in 1994, the match in which Brian Lara famously scored 501*. Sibley now joins Lara, Graeme Hick, and Darren Lehmann as one of only four players to register a triple hundred against Durham.

Surrey declared after Jacks was caught attempting a third successive six off Hogg, moments after taking the team past the historic 811 mark. Sibley was eventually dismissed at 745/5, just 24 runs short of reaching 1,000 first-class runs for the season. He departed to a standing ovation from a packed Oval crowd, including more than 5,000 schoolchildren.

George Drissell bore the brunt of the onslaught, finishing with figures of 45-1-247-1, the most runs ever conceded by a bowler in the County Championship.

Despite missing key pacer Ben Raine, Durham face an uphill battle as Surrey’s disciplined bowlers look to capitalise on their commanding position.
