Transforming Law and Order in Uttar Pradesh
The law enforcement scenario in Uttar Pradesh has undergone significant changes due to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's strict zero-tolerance approach. The state police, operating under his direct oversight, are now prioritizing rapid convictions through expedited legal processes.
Initiated on July 1, 2023, Operation Conviction has emerged as a pivotal initiative, resulting in the conviction of 97,158 offenders from July 2023 to mid-June 2025, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's office. ADG Prosecution Deepesh Juneja reported that out of 114,029 cases identified, 74,388 have been resolved, with convictions achieved in 69,422 instances, highlighting the administration's dedication to translating actions into tangible outcomes.
As part of this initiative, 68 individuals received death sentences, while 8,172 were handed life imprisonment. Additionally, 1,453 offenders were sentenced to more than 20 years, and 87,465 received sentences of up to 20 years. This data reflects the government's commitment to ensuring prompt and effective justice, especially in serious crime cases.
Focusing on organized crime, 395 individuals were convicted across 272 cases involving the most notorious criminals. In a significant victory against the mafia, 29 out of 69 identified mafias faced convictions, demonstrating that the crackdown extends beyond minor offenders. The campaign has also made strides in addressing crimes against children, with 17 individuals sentenced to death under the POCSO Act, including three in a single month, and 619 receiving life sentences.
Among the 68 death sentences, 17 were issued under the POCSO Act, 48 for severe crimes, and three under the ACL Act. On average, 143 cases were resolved, and 187 criminals were convicted each working day, showcasing the Yogi government's determination to enhance safety in Uttar Pradesh. Previously, on June 28, CM Yogi Adityanath engaged with the public during a Janta Darshan at the Gorakhnath Temple, where he addressed their concerns.
