While issuing a warning on social media platform X (East Twitter), DOT explained how private and banking information of people is being endangered through SIM Swap fraud.
What did Dot say?
Dot posted from its official handle, “Beware of sim swap fraud! Check the mobile numbers associated with your name and report any suspicious number – www.sancharsaathi.gov.in”.
The Department of Telecommunications has clarified that no call or message is made by DOT, TRAI or any telecom company for the closure of SIM card. Consider any such message or call as fake and be alert.
How is SIM swap fraud?
- Cyber criminals get information about the user and get a new sim issue through social engineering.
- As soon as they have a new sim activated, the real user’s number is closed and
- All OTP and alert now start getting to the culprit.
- On this basis, they misuse bank transactions, social media login etc.

How to avoid SIM Swap Fraud?
- Do not make your mobile number public on social media.
- Do not share OTP, PIN or Password to anyone.
- Keep the number to the bank private and do not share it on the public platform.
- Notice any sudden change in mobile network or SMS immediately.
- Contact the mobile service provider and bank immediately when suspected calls or messages come.
