Lorenzo Musetti admitted he felt like a stranger on grass - after becoming the third top 10 star to crash out of Wimbledon in the first round. Last year's semi-finalist Musetti suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Georgian qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Basilashvili upset his Italian rival 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, to secure his first ever Grand Slam win.
Musetti became the third player ranked in the world's top 10 to lose at the first time of asking, following earlier defeats for Holger Rune and Daniil Medvedev.
Musetti was one of the strongest performers on grass in 2024, reaching the last four at the All England Club and securing an ATP Tour-leading 12 wins on the surface.
But he arrived at SW19 this time round having not competed on grass, following an injury picked up during his semi final defeat at the French Open to Carlos Alcaraz.
And he admitted his lack of preparation had left him feeling like a novice.
He said: "I was struggling to feel comfortable on the court from the beginning.
"Even in the lateral movements, which normally I know how to move, seemed like I'd never played on this surface. It was a really bad performance."
