A ferry with 65 people aboard sank near Indonesia’s Bali island overnight, leaving 43 missing as rescuers searched through rough seas on Thursday. The KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya sank about 30 minutes after departing East Java’s Ketapang port late Wednesday, the National Search and Rescue Agency said. The ferry was en route to Bali’s Gilimanuk port, a 50-kilometre journey.
According to the rescue agency, as reported by the Associated Press, the ferry was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
Banyuwangi police chief Rama Samtama Putra told the news agency that two bodies have been recovered and 20 people rescued so far. Many survivors were found unconscious after drifting for hours in rough waters.
Since Wednesday night, nine boats, including two tugboats and two inflatable vessels, have been searching for the missing people. Rescuers battled waves up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) high in the darkness overnight.
