The Historical Visit Of PM Modi

This exchange unfolded during PM Modi’s historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago — the first bilateral Prime Ministerial-level visit from India to the island nation since 1999. The visit is part of his ongoing five-nation tour and marks his inaugural official trip to Trinidad and Tobago as Prime Minister.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi landed at the Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain to a grand ceremonial welcome. Dressed in traditional Indian attire, Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar led her entire cabinet — comprising 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament — to receive him personally at the airport. A Guard of Honour and cultural performances underscored the warmth and significance of the occasion.

Adding a cultural touch to the diplomatic engagement, PM Modi expressed delight after witnessing a spirited Bhojpuri Chautal performance — a traditional folk art form rooted in eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Describing it as “a priceless cultural connection,” he acknowledged the enduring historical and emotional ties that link India and Trinidad and Tobago, where a large segment of the population traces its ancestry back to India.
