Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a foreign visit to 5 countries. In this foreign visit being held from July 2 to July 10, PM Modi is going to the West African countries Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Namibia for the first time, which is being considered very important in terms of diplomacy. However, on the other hand, India has become popular as an education hub among students from African countries. The question is why a large number of students from African countries come to India for higher education? What is the number of students from African countries in India? Is the reason for coming to India for education a scholarship or something else? Let us know the reason behind this.
Number of students from African countries in India
Students from African countries come to India in large numbers. According to a statistic, in the year 2023, about 50 thousand African students were receiving higher education in India. According to a survey, the highest number of students studying in India is from Nigeria. After this comes the number of students from Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, and Mauritius. At the same time, a report says that students from more than 19 countries on the African continent are getting higher education in India.
Affordable education and STEM are the main attractions.
Why do students from African countries come to India for higher education? The answer to this question is affordable education and STEM education. Education in India is cheaper than in other countries, which fits in the budget of African students. On the other hand, the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum and its fees in Indian universities also attract African students.
How much scholarship is available?
Along with affordable and STEM education, scholarships also attract students from African countries to higher education in India. The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) runs the India-Africa Friendship Scholarship Program for African students, under which about 900 scholarships are given to African students. In which graduation students are given 18 thousand, post-graduation students are given 20 thousand and PhD students are given 25 thousand rupees. At the same time, a concession facility is also given in tuition fees. Along with this, scholarships are also given to African students under E Vidya Bharti and E Arogya Bharti programs. Under both these programs, African students are given a concession in tuition fees. Along with this, African countries also give scholarships to their students.
Scholarships to 32 thousand students of African countries
The Government of India has given scholarships for higher education to more than 32 thousand students of African countries by the year 2023 under its scholarship program. The Government of India aims to provide scholarships to 50 thousand students of African countries. Actually, the Government of India had announced 50,000 scholarships during the India Africa Forum Summit-III in the year 2015. These scholarships are being provided under the e-Vidyabharati program.
