
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday was conferred with ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago,’ which is the highest civilian honour of the nation. With this honour, PM Modi has now become the first foreign leader to have received this award. This is the 25th international honour bestowed upon PM Modi by any country.
The award was presented by the President of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Kangaloo, during a ceremonial event at the President's House in Port of Spain.
It was announced by Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Thursday, who described PM Modi’s visit as a moment of shared pride and historical connection.

"Honoured to be conferred with ‘The Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago’. I accept it on behalf of 140 crore Indians," PM Modi said in a post on X after receiving the award.
After accepting the award, PM Modi addressed the gathering, where he underlined that the special ties between India and Trinidad and Tobago were based on "shared history and cultural heritage forged by Indians who arrived in the country 180 years ago". He also affirmed his commitment to further deepening the bilateral partnership between the two nations.
The award was conferred on the prime minister in recognition for his "statesmanship, for championing the priorities of the Global South and for his exceptional contribution to strengthening the relationship between India and Trinidad & Tobago," , the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
PM Modi's first official visit to Trinidad and Tobago began Thursday with a ceremonial Guard of Honour at Piarco International Airport. He was received by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar along with 38 ministers and four Members of Parliament of the Caribbean nation.
PM Modi's visit to Trinidad and Tobago is part of a broader five-nation tour from July 2 to July 9.
