Bail Granted to Enforcement Directorate Officer

Cuttack: Chintan Raghuvanshi, a Deputy Director with the Enforcement Directorate, was released on interim bail from Jharpada jail on Friday evening. His release follows his arrest by the CBI for allegedly accepting a bribe from a businessman in Bhubaneswar.

The Orissa High Court approved his interim bail for a duration of 10 days on Wednesday, citing his recent fatherhood on June 28 as a reason for his request to see his newborn and participate in family rituals.

His attorney, Lalitendu Mishra, confirmed that Raghuvanshi was freed after the necessary documentation from both the high court and lower court was submitted to the jail officials.

Justice Gourishankar Satapathy, presiding over a single-judge bench, granted the bail with the stipulation that Raghuvanshi must not leave the country during this 10-day period.

Raghuvanshi and an associate were apprehended on May 30 in Bhubaneswar, allegedly caught in the act of accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh from a businessman involved in mining.

The CBI reported that he initially demanded Rs 5 crore from the businessman, who was facing allegations of financial misconduct, to avoid arrest. The businessman managed to negotiate the amount down to Rs 2 crore, with the Rs 20 lakh being part of that arrangement.
