Exit from Microsoft Pakistan

The world's legendary tech company Microsoft announced to stop its limited operation in Pakistan as part of its global strategy. On Friday, various parties described it as a worrying indication for the country's economy. Microsoft cited the global restructuring and a change in the model with cloud-based, partner-in-law, closing its office in Pakistan after 25 years. This step has been taken at a time when this Microsoft has cut around 9,100 jobs (about four percent of the workforce) worldwide since 2023.

Why Microsoft Exit

Former Microsoft Pakistan Founder Jawad Rahman urged the government and the Information Technology (IT) Minister to join the technical veterans with a bold KPI (main performance indicator) operated scheme. He said that the company's exit from the country reflects the current business atmosphere. Rahman wrote on the social media platform LinkedIn of professionals that even global legendary companies like Microsoft find it unbalanced.

Concern for Economy

Former Pakistan President Arif Alvi also expressed concern over the closure of Microsoft's operation in the post on social media forum X. He wrote that this is a worrying sign for our economic future. Alvi claimed that Microsoft once considered Pakistan for expansion, but due to that instability, the company chose Vietnam by the end of 2022. He wrote that the opportunity was lost.

Jawad said that Microsoft does not operate full commercial base in Pakistan, but depends on enterprises, education and contact offices focused on government customers. In recent years, most of that work has already been handed over to local partners, while licenses and contracts are managed by their European Center in Ireland.
