In July 2025, there will be a holiday in banks for a total of 13 days
There is a holiday on Muharram every year in India, but this time a special confusion has been created in 2025. It is being claimed in social media and some reports that banks and stock markets will be closed on 7 July (Monday) due to Muharram holiday. So is this really so? At this time, a question is confusing people across the country. Will Muharram leave on July 6 or on 7 July? The reason for this is the Islamic calendar dependent on the moon, due to which it is not yet decided on which day Muharram will be celebrated.
Why confusion about the holiday date?
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic New Year and its 10th date, called 'Ashura', is celebrated in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. On this day, government offices, banks, schools and markets are closed in many places. Muharram in 2025 may be on July 6 (Sunday) or 7 July (Monday), the final confirmation will be only after the moon is seen. If there is Muharram on July 6, then there will be no separate holiday because that day is Sunday i.e. already a holiday. But if Muharram is celebrated on 7 July, then the holiday can be declared on Monday.
Banks and government offices
If Muharram falls on 7 July, banks and government institutions will remain closed in many parts of the country. Especially in states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Telangana, holiday notification is likely to come.
Will the stock markets be closed?
On July 6, it is Sunday anyway when the markets are closed. If Muharram takes place on July 7 and the holiday is declared, then business will be suspended in all major stock markets of India including BSE and NSE. In such a situation, equity and derivatives trading, currency and interest rates, derivatives and securities lending and browing (SLB) services can remain closed.
At the moment, no holiday has been shown in the official trading calendar of the stock market on July 7, but the situation will depend on the moon and the government announcement.
Religious importance
Muharram is one of the four sacred months of Islam. The 10th of this month is called 'Ashura', on this day, Imam Hussain was martyred in the battle of Karbala in 680 AD. The Shia communities take out mourning and procession on this day. It is celebrated with reverence and sorrow across the country.
