Wasps stay out of homes for good if you place 1 natural kitchen item on your windowsill

Summer is a time when we get lots of beautiful weather, but unfortunately this can encourage lots of horrible insects like wasps to come crawling into our homes. Wasps are one of the most hated pests at this time of year as they are aggressive and, if you are unfortunate enough to experience it, their sting is incredibly painful.

Many people use a bug spray as soon as they spot a wasp, but they can contain some really harsh chemicals that are toxic to breathe in and can linger in the home for a long time. Instead, a more natural yet effective away to keep wasps away from your open windows, as the experts at Bee Aware Allergy have shared, you just need a little bit of cucumber.

They said: "Believe it or not, cucumber can help ward off unwanted stinging pests! All you need to do is slice a fresh cucumber and place it on aluminium foil. Another option is to place the cucumber slices in an aluminium pie dish.

"This trick also deters slugs and other types of bugs by producing a chemical reaction. Humans can't smell the reaction, but the pests will steer clear of it!"

It might sound strange, but cucumber ascorbic acid (also known as vitamin C) which can have a bitter smell that humans cannot detect but many insects will hate.

When cucumber touches tinfoil, it creates a reaction that makes this sour scent stronger, which can deter wasps as the smell can overwhelm them.

Wasps also navigate using light, so any bright flashes from tinfoil reflecting will confuse them as they can interpret it as water, which will make them believe an area is unsafe.

How to use cucumbers to deter wasps

All you need to do is cut a cucumber into thin rounds, and then lay them on a sheet of tin foil when the shiny side facing upwards.

Place the sheet on a windowsill, near a picnic table or on grass, then replace the cucumbers once they dry out.

Your home, as well as a picnic or barbecue, should stay wasp free so you can enjoy your summer without worrying about being stung.
