Gopal Khemka, a prominent entrepreneur and owner of Magadh Hospital, was shot dead late Friday night by unidentified assailants outside his apartment near Ramgulam Chowk in Patna. The incident occurred around 11:30 pm while he was returning from Bankipur Club. The attackers, reportedly on a motorcycle, fired at Khemka as he stepped out of his car. He was immediately rushed to Mediversal Hospital by his family but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Khemka's journey as an entrepreneur began modestly with a small pharmacy named Aushadhi Medico on Ashok Rajpath. His vision and business acumen led to rapid expansion, with several branches opening across the city. Over the years, he diversified into various sectors, including real estate, manufacturing, fuel retail, and healthcare. He registered his first company, GK Cotton, in the Hajipur Industrial Area in 1985 and also ventured into carton manufacturing.
His business interests included a petrol pump on Patna's Fraser Road and culminated in the launch of Magadh Hospital, a multi-speciality healthcare facility in Rajendra Nagar.
Family Ties And Tragedies
Khemka was one of four brothers, all of whom were engaged in the pharmaceutical business. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. Tragedy struck the family earlier when his elder son, Gunjan Khemka, was fatally shot outside his factory in Hajipur in 2018. His younger son, Gaurav Khemka, is a doctor at IGIMS, Patna. His daughter resides in London with her family.
Police Launch Probe, Property Dispute Suspected
In response to the incident, Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar announced the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under the City SP to lead the inquiry. The Special Task Force (STF) has also been roped in. Preliminary findings suggest that a property dispute could be the motive behind the killing.
City SP (Central) Diksha Kumari confirmed the recovery of bullet shells from the scene and stated that CCTV footage from the area is under review. “Khemka received one gunshot injury. We have recovered spent bullets from the crime scene, and CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed for clues,” she said.
Public Anger And Political Outcry Ahead Of Elections
The murder has sparked public anger and drawn strong political reactions. With Bihar Assembly elections approaching, the incident has amplified scrutiny over law and order in the state. MP Rajesh Ranjan (Pappu Yadav) visited the family and held the state government accountable for deteriorating safety in the capital.
