KARACHI: As the holy month of Muharram unwinds, Pakistani artists have participated along with the believers in commemorating the memory of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) by performing Noha Khwani with all their heart. Remembered for his ultimate sacrifice at the Battle of Karbala, Imam Hussain (RA) is remembered globally by Muslims at this time, particularly during the first ten days of Muharram.
In the current year, numerous popular Pakistani actors and singers have read out elegies in their own voice, posting them on social networking sites. These obituaries have garnered broad appreciation from fans for the depth of feeling and authenticity that they reflect.
Muharram is of great religious importance as it is the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (RA) and his followers, who fought for justice against oppression. During this time, gatherings are made where elegies are recited and the unfortunate Karbala events are recalled with respect. All these rituals remind us of sacrifice, courage, and devotion.
As pious Muslims all over the world, Pakistani artists too have participated in their own way. Several of them contributed to Muharram congregation, while others through their artistic skills contributed by reciting nohas and devotional poetry.
Among them, actor Imran Abbas posted a noha recital in his own soulful voice on his YouTube channel. Singer Asim Azhar posted a TikTok lament, while rising star Samar Jafri uploaded his own poetic tribute. Actor and TV host Mohsin Abbas Haider also shared his support, posting a poem on social media. In the same vein, singer Israr Shah posted his own rendition of a noha on YouTube, with his audience praising him.
These artistic works depict the strong cultural and emotional attachment Pakistani performers have towards the Karbala message. Their expressions of mourning and memorization during Muharram provide a cultural significance to religious practice that is being conducted throughout the nation.
