Will the traffic of websites end AI feature? Serious allegations on Google

Tech veteran Google is currently stuck in serious controversy. A complaint has been lodged in the European Union (EU) about Google’s AI Overviews feature. The complaint has been made by a group of independent publishers, which says this feature is causing serious and perhaps irreparable damage to their business. The publishers have demanded that the EU should be temporary ban on this feature.

What is Google’s AI Overview feature?
Google has recently added a new feature to the search results called “AI Overviews”. In this, the summary of the question made by the user is shown at the top by Summary AI – which is prepared by mixing content of various websites.

Its disadvantage is:

The user gets a direct answer.

He does not click on any website.

This reduces the number of traffic and viewers on the publishers’ website.

Publishers also suffer losses in revenue (earnings).

Since May 2024, advertisements (ADS) have also been included in this AI Summer, which has further increased the problem.

Angry publishers said: Journalism threatened
Organizations like Independent Publishers Alliance, Foxglove Legal, and Movement for An Open Web have alleged that:

Google is taking wrong advantage of its strong search position.

Publishers’ original content is being used without permission.

This has created an economic crisis for them.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has also confirmed that he has received a complaint against Google.

Google’s side: “We send billions of clicks to websites”
Google reacted to these allegations and said:

AI overviews motivates users to ask more questions.

It promotes new content and new business.

Changes in website traffic can occur due to many reasons – such as weather, trends or search algorithms.

However, Foxglove co-director Roja Curling says that publishers should get the option to stay out of AI overviews.

Complaint in America also declines in demand for content
Not only Europe but also in America, a similar complaint has been revealed against Google. An education tech company alleges that the demand for original content is decreasing due to AI overviews, which is a matter of concern for the industry.
