In the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, South Africa’s all-rounder Wiaan Mulder etched his name into cricket lore. Making his debut as Test captain, Mulder scored a monumental triple century (300 runs), becoming the first player ever to achieve a triple hundred in the first innings while captaining a Test side for the first time.
Historic Triple Hundred for Mulder
At 27, Mulder stepped into the captain’s role after regular captain Temba Bavuma and stand-in skipper Keshav Maharaj—who suffered a groin injury in the first Test—were sidelined. Batting at number three, Mulder led from the front, rescuing South Africa from early setbacks with an innings destined to be remembered.
Mulder’s unbeaten 300 came off 297 balls, featuring 38 fours and 3 sixes. His knock is the second-fastest triple century in Test cricket history, just behind Virender Sehwag’s 278-ball effort. Mulder also joins Hashim Amla as only the second South African to reach a triple century in Test cricket.
