Telugu star Vijay Deverakonda, known for doing things on his own terms, often faces backlash online, sometimes for his career choices, and other times for his comments.
Recently, he addressed the criticism he received over adding the 'The' tag to his name. He opened up about the thought process behind it and why he eventually decided to drop it. The actor also spoke about staying true to himself despite the constant scrutiny. Vijay Deverakonda Addresses Backlash Over Adding 'The' Recalling the backlash over adding 'The' to his name, he told the Hollywood Reporter India, "That was one whole situation in itself." He continued, "There was a crazy amount of backlash because 'The' was added to my name. Interestingly, no other person ever got backlash for something like that. You can have any name-from Universal Star to People's Star-and people younger than me, older than me, those who debuted before me, everyone has a tagline. I was probably the only one without one. Nobody else gets backlash." Vijay Deverakonda Didn't Want A Tag "During Liger, my team was pushing for a tag because others were coining things on their own. I resisted for a long time because I didn't want the tag, I just wanted to be known just by my name. But in articles, the press would call me Southern Sensation, Rowdy Star and many other different variants," he recalled. He shared that he never liked being called title 'Southern Sensation' as they were "limiting." To avoid using any grand or conventional tag, he suggested simply using 'The' before his name. However, even that drew backlash. Eventually, he told his team to drop all titles and just refer to him as Vijay Deverakonda, as that's how he wants to be known, nothing more, nothing less. Currently, the actor is gearing up for his upcoming film Kingdom. It is set to release in theatres on July 31.
