On Day 5 of the second Test between India and England, India had a chance to make history by winning their first Test match at Edgbaston. After a delay, India captain Shubman Gill chose to begin with Prasidh Krishna instead of Mohammed Siraj. Gill also switched Akash Deep’s end from the previous day.
Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach, said Gill’s choice was questionable. He noted that Siraj, who had taken the most wickets in the game thus far, was not bowling.
Shastri said that Siraj had six wickets in the first innings and one in the second. He was watching from mid-on as his younger teammates bowled. He probably hoped they would get a wicket, or he would be eager to bowl.
Shastri was also concerned about Gill changing Akash Deep’s end, since he had taken two wickets from the other end on Day 4.
However, Akash Deep did well. He took Ollie Pope’s wicket in the 20th over and then got Harry Brook out LBW in the 22nd over. Because of this, Shubman Gill’s decision to switch Akash Deep’s end proved useful for Team India.
