New Delhi. The Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has prepared modern cannon advanced Todd Artillery Gun System (ATAGAS) to give a befitting reply to the enemy. Now preparations are being made for its testing. This cannon, in collaboration with the Ordnance Research and Development Foundation (Arde) present in Pune, and private companies such as Bharat Forge and Tata (TATA) advanced systems, this cannon can be fired in 2.5 minutes. ATAGS cannon is one of the best cannon systems in the world. It is a 155 mm / 52 caliber cannon. It was approved in 2012 for DRDO’s Ordnance Research and Development Foundation (ARDE).
The maximum fire distance of ATAGS is 48 km. It has a barrel with a capacity of 25 bombs and can fire in zone seven. In addition, it can target accurately. It can be easily deployed in all weather and terrain.
It is favorable for firing ammunition with the army. The ability to connect with the Indian Army’s Artillery Combat Command and Control System (ACCSS). The purpose of ACCCS is to automate field artillery with projections and privacy in the areas of communication.
It has two major assembly. Upper carriage and undercuries. The upper carriage has a weapon assembly (gun barrel, breech and muzzle brake), recording system, cradle, sides, elevating and traversing mechanisms, layer stations, loader stations and ammunition. While undercuries include structural, automotive and accessories.
It has been paired with electric drive. It can conduct automatic operation of shell and charge loading, raming and gun deployment. This also increases firing capacity.
ATAGS is equipped with automatic propulsion capacity. This capacity associated with the auxiliary power unit includes an automotive system, hydraulic transmission, and acceptance mechanism. This gave ATAGS power of dynamic, deployment and gun automation.
It can work in both direct and indirect fire mode. Many monitoring systems have been installed in it. Through optronic mode, the cannon in direct fire mode can penetrate the goals up to 1.5 km away. This includes a laser range finder with a day camera, thermal imaging and identity range of up to 2 km and the identity range up to 10 km.
The design and reliability of the recuel system was prepared by completing a continuous recording and run -out cycles of at least 100 cycles. The recall system was tested on particularly designed stable and hydraulic testing benches, with dynamic conditions that would eventually work under which the gun would eventually work.
The ATAGS can feat 10 shells on a target in a very short time of 2.5 minutes. Burst can score five rounds in fire mode in 60 seconds. Depending on the type of ammunition, it can fract the shells up to 48 kilometers.
The Indian Army has ordered 307 ATAGS cannons in March 2025. This order is divided between Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems in a ratio of 60:40. That is, 60% of the cannons will make India forge and 40% Tata Company. All these cannons will be handed over to the army over a period of five years.
